We’re back from the vet. Bunny body language indicate that the boys aren’t pleased at being hauled to the clinic so close to dinner time:

We’ve decided to try a different antibiotic for Hans’ abscess, one from the penicillin group. Our vet is helping us source for this drug.. I really hope it’s available here.
Penicillin supposedly wreaks havoc on rabbits’ normal gut flora, more so if it is given orally. If we manage to find the drug for Hans, it will be administered by subcutaneous injections and hopefully there will be less upset to his gut. If anyone reading this has had their rabbit treated with penicillin before, I would really appreciate it if you could share your experience with me, particularly on how the penicillin was administered and how your rabbit reacted to it. Many thanks in advance
Meanwhile, Hans will be on oral Baytril for a week, to prevent any further flare-ups of the abscess.

Yes, yes, yes, my big girl Bandit was treated with subcutaneous injections of Penicillin for gum and tooth infections and it really worked, it was what got her off the other antibiotics that didn’t really work. It is super easy to do the injections and a treat after (for you and him) doesn’t hurt.
Oh dear, poor Hans…I really hope this one is the right one..it’s no fun to go to the vet and so close to dinner time!! He must be thinking “what was my human mummy thinking…”. Anyway, hang on there big guy..you’ll do well
lots of furry hugs from me..
Our sweetie Hans
poor boy

Hope the vet finds quikly the best medicines !!
Take care…..

unfortunatley the Dr.’s at the vet clinic I work at are not all that knowledgable on rabbits to do the sub Q with penicillin, I just know it’s not good to give orally. Hopefully Hans will get over this very soon and not have any more trips to the dreaded vet so close to dinner time:)
I hope the new medicine is available soon and does the trick. I’m sure Hans would be thrilled to not see the vet for a good long while!
Oh, poor little Hans!! Hang in there little buddy. Your mama will figure things out and make you feel all better!
My little Gracie was on penicillin injections for her tooth root abscesses and it kept them controlled. It didn’t bother her at all. Just be careful if you happen to get any of the meds on the skin/fur you need to wipe it away with a wet cloth so the bunnies don’t lick it off. I just injected it under the skin between the shoulder blades, you can also alternate with between the shoulder blades and between the hips, if you don’t want to stick them in the same spot every day.
They were molar abscesses and she was too old and sick to have any sort of surgery done to try to clean them up.
If you have any more questions I’d be happy to try and answer them
Oh, we hope that the medicine helps little Hans! We are thinking lots of happy thoughts for him!
Once you get an instruction ondoing the sub Q injection, it is pretty easy on both of you.
We did it for a looooong time with a bunny – bluey – who had a bad internal abcess. I’m not too sure it was penacillin though, it was quite awhile ago .. you might try more i-net sleuthing before you decide what to give.
Good luck Hans …. no bunny wants a ride when he could just stay home in a cozy place!
It sounds like a plan. All the favorable comments are encouraging. Get well, Hans. Bailey needs you.
sending a hug to little Hans xxx
I don’t use regular drugs on my rabbits as I take them to a homeopathic vet. But hopefully this will work for Hans and clear up the infection.
Little Gracie was on the penicillin for about 3-4 months I think. Plus Baytril and Metranidazole I believe. Since her condition was chronic she just stayed on it. The penicillin was stopped once and her respiratory problems came back (they think a tooth root and abscess had reached her sinuses).
Oh this is such a mess. He’s been through so much. I’m sending prayers for the sweet one.

I really hope you find penacillin. I think we give it to our pigs, it helps alot. Im not sure but I think we purchased it at Grange Co-Op. Get better Hans!!!!!!
An antibiotic of the penicillin family was used for Hugo when he had the tooth abscess and worked well – I had to give him the injections (sub-cut) and after the first two and a little help from Jo, one of the vets, it went easy. As long as the medicine is injected nothing can happen with the guts balance, Hugo did really well. Fingers crossed for Hans…we’re all cheering for him, especially Miss Eve and Neville
Kisses on the ears of all the furry butts xxx
poor Hans, give him cuddles from me. Hope he gets better soon
I had an older lop with abcesses in his jaw-Baytril did nothing, nor did Chlor Palm. What did work like a Hot Darn was using a bicillin combination (bicillin isn’t the name of the drug, just a general description of a dual penicillin – pen procaine and pen benzathine), and injecting the abcess directly.
I can send you the information if you are interested, and perhaps you can share it with your vet for discussion.
