Thanks for the well wishes, everyone!! Hans has made it home safely ๐
He went to the vet at 11.30 am, got his incisors filed (no molar spurs, yay!!), and was good to leave by 1.00 pm.
Finally, by 3.30pm, Hans’ body started to feel warm again. He was very insistent on getting up, and was tumbling all over. I’m glad I didn’t throw this pink cube bed thingy away after Buttons and Yohji destroyed parts of it.. it makes a really good recovery bed! Hans won’t hurt himself if he tumbles over while he’s inside it.
By 4.30 pm, Hans was getting pretty stable on his feet.
I’m happy that Hans picked himself up quite quickly.
However, the not-so-good news is that.. the vet has confirmed that Hans’ lower jaw is longer than it should be.
Here’s how his teeth look like now, the incisors are still not meeting as they should:
So Hans’ teeth issues are due to his genetic makeup. He will most likely require recurrent visits to the vet, unless his upper jaw length somehow catches up with that of his lower jaw and his teeth re-align properly. We’re keeping all fingers, toes and paws crossed for that to happen! Meanwhile, Hans will be showered with loads of hay and chew toys!
As for the option of extracting his teeth.. the vet is against doing that because, firstly, Hans is still young (I agree that it may not be suitable at this age, as I have read that it’s easier to extract teeth from an adult rabbit). Secondly, Hans’ teeth are in good condition.. they are not decaying or rotten. Decayed teeth would be rejected by the body, whereas good teeth are very much a part of his jaw and removing them forcefully could cause harm to the little jaw (Umm.. I’m not too sure about this. I was of the impression that extraction is safe if performed properly).
Anyway, I’m still waiting to see how Hans’ teeth issue works out, before deciding on the next step.. so I’ll not pursue the extraction option with the vet for the time being. I’ll cross that bridge when I foresee myself getting to it ๐
Again, many many many thanks for all the well wishes, supportive comments and helpful information Hans & I have received. We love all you bunny people out there!!
Aww… poor thing. Lots of love and cuddling coming over from Kenji and Yuki and me.
So glad Hans is back and doing well! Yay for hay! Hope all goes well for his jaws/teeth in the future. We can only hope for the best! (And, although he may disapprove, pink is a good color for Hans!)
I’m so glad to see little Hans up and about so quickly! We’ll keep our fingers crossed for him in the future!
Bunny Hugs and Kisses from all at Meadow Haven…
Glad that he made it out safely. I wonder if they have dentures or braces for rabbits. If only there is an option of using a brace to pull the top teeth further, it would grow nicely over the bottom ones.
Macho boy buns can wear pink, Hans, and you wear it quite well with your classical gray. Glad he made a good recovery is it already tearing away at his hay :0) Your plan sounds good. What about jaw and face massage?
glad that Hans is well………
um, i know it’s not a manly thing, but hans, you are SO FLIPPIN’ CUTE. sheesh. it’s hard to take. that photo of you warming his ears with your hand is so sweet. And what a great idea to have that cube for his recovery. the vet should suggest those or have them to borrow for recovering bunnies!
๐
I’m so glad he’s home safe! Go, Hans! I hope the problem somehow corrects itself.
Hans looks like a healthy bunny who loves to nom, so I agree with your vet that filing his teeth regularly should be the solution, not extracting his teeth.
Was he sedated and that’s why he was cold?
Glad to hear that he’s home now.
ps: Hans looks much smaller than Buttons.
Good luck Hans! Lots of luck!
We’re happy he is feeling ok – give him some banana from us!
Hi Hans … good goin’ we are sure glad it was not us. You got dealt a bum hand … er … jaw. Good luck – we’ll be thinking about you.
it means hans has to see the vet for trimming again? i hope miracle happens to the upper jaw… and hand will as good as new.. send my hugs and kisses to Hans ya..
All the bunns at The House of Rabbits like their salad and anxiously await it. Racer does leave some of it uneaten ..
Hans may just never have had greens and so they are a new thing.
Dandelion greens and clover heads are favorites too.
We are so happy to hear that Hans is home again and that everything went OK at the vet!
Pink is a nice color, Hans! You have it in your ear linings, and it goes lovely with your grey fur!
Thank you. I’m so glad that Winnie’s teeth are ok.
To sedate a chin & extract a tooth is as risky as doing it for rabbits.
Won’t go into details, but teeth root problems in chins are more life threatening than in rabbits, as the roots can either poke the eye (causing blindness) or the brain (causing brain damage).
I believe the vet used a diamond burr to trim down the molar? How did your vet trim Hans’ teeth?
The vet filed Winnieโs molar with sedation.
How often would you have to get Hans’ teeth trimmed if you were to do the bunny burrito & no sedation?
Oh, Hans! I’m so sad to hear about this. I’m glad you pulled through your visit okay. I’m crossing my fingers your jaw evens at as you grow up. Mario says he’d be very upset to come-to in a pink fluffy bed, too!
I also tagged you/and or the Furry Butts on my blog!
awwww.
I didn’t even realize he went in, I’ve had a busy weekend!
But I’m certainly glad everything went so well, none the less ๐
He looks ok now..he tell other bunnies about his ordeal with the vet experience
oh what lovely photos of his recovery, I do hope his jaw does catch up with his teeth, he’s such a cutie too isn’t he…
What a cute Hans – we are glad he has recovered. That pink really set off his tan fur!
